Migraine is a common clinical idiopathic headache that affects a large number of people, and in severe cases, it can affect the normal study, work and life of patients. Western medicine treatment will inevitably bring some side effects, such as causing gastrointestinal reactions and adverse effects on liver and kidney functions. As a green therapy, acupuncture has the advantages of rapid pain relief, long-lasting efficacy, safe application, and benign self-regulation without side effects. In the book “Acupuncture and Moxibustion”, it is recorded that the famous doctor Hua Tuo cured Cao Cao’s headache by acupuncture, “Wei Wu Di suffered from head wind, his heart was in turmoil and his eyes were dizzy, and Hua Tuo cured his head immediately by acupuncture”. Modern research has found that acupuncture treatment can improve the diastolic and contractile functions of cerebral vascular smooth muscle in migraine patients, effectively adjust the functional state of their vascular endothelial cells, reduce the speed of cranial arterial blood flow during attacks, and normalize intracranial blood flow. In the clinical treatment of migraine, acupuncture is mainly based on milli-needle acupuncture, mostly taking the points of Fengchi, Rate Valley, Silhouette, Head Vitality, Sun, Hangli, Baihui, Hegu, Taichong and Lijiao. In the acupuncture operation mostly use penetrating acupuncture, that is, a needle through two points. For example, the Yuan Dynasty “Yu Long Song” cloud: “bias positive head wind pain is difficult to cure, silk bamboo gold needle can also be applied, along the skin backward through the rate of valley, one needle two points rare in the world.” In general, needles are kept for 30 minutes each time, and according to the principle of “it is appropriate to keep the needles for a long time for pain”, for those with serious condition and severe headache, needles can be kept for more than one hour or the buried needle method can be used for treatment. In general, acupuncture treatment for migraine is given once a day during the acute attack period, with 5 times as a course of treatment, and each course of treatment is given at an interval of 2 days. In the first 4 weeks of remission period, treatment is given 2 to 3 times a week, and thereafter, treatment is given once a week. In female migraine patients whose pain attacks are associated with menstruation, treatment can be started 2 weeks before the next menstrual period to reduce the severity of the attacks or to end the migraine attacks. Of course, the treatment can be combined with acupuncture, cupping, acupoint injection and auricular pressure as appropriate to enhance the therapeutic effect. When treating migraine, we should pay attention to 1. Reasonable arrangement of life and rest, keep a relaxed mood, avoid excessive mental stress and bad emotional stimulation. 2, avoid eating cheese, chocolate and other foods containing tyrosine, avoid smoking and alcohol. Female patients should drink more water than usual before and between periods to help avoid headaches. 3. Closely observe the aura of migraine attacks, such as dizziness, nausea, irritability symptoms and whether they occur during exertion and work stress. Take effective measures promptly if aura symptoms are detected, such as resting in a quiet environment. Sunlight exposure and temperature changes may trigger or exacerbate headache attacks, so patients can wear sunglasses outside and minimize the chance of blowing air conditioners. Patients should rest in bed if possible during the attack. 4. Avoid the abuse of pain medication, and follow the doctor’s prescription to prevent the drug headache caused by drug overuse. A randomized controlled clinical study conducted in Italy showed that compared with conventional western medicine such as flunarizine, ciprofloxacin and dihydroergotamine, acupuncture can save 1,332,285 lira per person per year for migraine, which will save the government about 650 million dollars per year. In conclusion, acupuncture treatment for migraine is effective in relieving patients’ headache and accompanying symptoms, reducing the number and frequency of attacks, and is green and economical with no side effects, making it an ideal treatment option for migraine patients.
