The commonly used reconstructive materials are implants (commonly silicone prostheses) and autologous tissue, or a combination of both. Implant breast reconstruction avoids secondary damage to the organism during the process of obtaining tissue from the donor area, and is less difficult to perform and has a faster postoperative recovery. Patients who have undergone reconstruction on one side of the breast may have asymmetry between the two sides after the opposite breast tends to sag over time. Patients who undergo bilateral reconstruction can usually maintain better results in the long term.
