After a patient has undergone surgery for colorectal cancer, the decision to receive further chemotherapy to improve disease-free survival and overall survival is based on pathological findings and intraoperative conditions. At what time is it appropriate to receive chemotherapy? If the patient is physically able, chemotherapy should be received as early as possible. A recent systematic review and meta-analysis of 10 studies with more than 15,000 cases focused on the impact of the timing of adjuvant chemotherapy after radical surgery on outcome.151 The results of this analysis showed that a 4-week delay in adjuvant chemotherapy decreased overall survival by 14%, thus suggesting that postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy should be started as soon as medically feasible for the patient.
