Immunofixation electrophoresis is a test that is used to detect the amount and composition of various trace proteins in body fluids (such as urine). By determining these trace proteins, it is possible to see if there is inflammatory disease of the kidneys. It is commonly used to detect alpha microglobulin, beta microglobulin, etc. The presence or absence of these proteins and the composition of these proteins are analyzed to determine the degree of inflammation in the kidneys. Once a positive fixed protein electrophoresis is detected, a 24-hour urine protein quantification is also done to determine the amount of protein that is leaked.
