What a keloid looks like

A keloid is a raised scar that is caused by excessive proliferation of fibroblasts during the formation of the scar. Keloid scars are red or dark red bumps with a round or oval elevated surface that are smooth and can occur in isolation or in patches. It is a condition that occurs during the healing process of the skin after external stimulation and is usually accompanied by itching, burning, or even pain. However, if treatment is desired, the entire keloid can be surgically removed and then cosmetically closed. This is followed by the use of localized radiation therapy, which can prevent the keloid from bulging again, thus achieving the desired treatment result. Topical injections of Depo-Provera can also be used. The option of using regular lasers or other types of treatments is not recommended, as they may stimulate excessive fibroblast proliferation and cause recurrent flare-ups of the disease.
