What is the proper way to make tonics

Correct boiling of tonics should choose the right decoction apparatus, decoction water, decoction fire and decoction method. 1. Choose the right decoction utensils: casserole is the best; enameled porcelain pot is the second best; avoid using copper, iron, tin and other metal utensils to avoid chemical changes. 2. Choose the right water for decoction: in ancient times, long running water, well water, rain water, spring water, etc., and now mineral water, pure water, etc. are used. 3. Selecting the right decoction fire: there is a difference between civil and military fire. Wen fire refers to slow simmering with small fire; Wu fire refers to fast cooking with rapid fire. 4. Choose the right decoction method: soak the herbs first, and the amount of water should be higher than the surface of the herbs. General decoction twice, preferably three times to get all the power. The second addition of water for the first one-third to one-half. The juice of the two decoctions should be divided into two to three times. The decoction is suitable to be decocted with martial fire to relieve epidemics and clear heat; the decoction is suitable to be decocted with mild fire to tonify the body. Due to the special texture of herbs, there are different methods of decoction, such as decocting first (e.g. ephedra decocting first to remove poison, shellfish decocting first to get the full effect); decocting later (e.g. flowers and herbs decocting for a long time for fear of losing their medicinal properties); wrapping up and cooking (e.g. Pu huang); decocting in a separate pan (for precious herbs); and melting (e.g. Colla Corii Asini, Colla Corii Asini), etc., which are chosen according to the characteristics of the medicines. Decocting is one of the most important parts of the TCM treatment process, and is closely related to the therapeutic effect, so please follow your physician’s instructions.
