How does your pulse beat when you’re pregnant?

The pulse refers to the cyclical changes that occur within the blood vessels as the heart alternately contracts and diastolic, causing periodic dilation and contraction of the vessel walls. In Chinese medicine a woman with a slippery pulse is likely to be pregnant, but it can also occur due to other factors, and it is generally not easy for non-TCM professionals to identify if it is a slippery pulse, so relying on the pulse alone to diagnose pregnancy is not rigorous. The pulse is taken by placing the ring finger, middle finger and index finger at the radial artery. When a woman is pregnant, she will feel her pulse sliding around and being strong and slightly fast, and her pulse will be smooth like a pearl, like a row of bubbles or small beads passing by, this is the slippery pulse. When a woman is pregnant, her pulse beats strongly and quickly because she has a life inside her body and her body has more blood volume than an ordinary woman. Pregnancy is initially suspected when the pulse is combined with the woman’s other conditions, such as history of intercourse, menopause, early pregnancy reactions such as nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, breast tenderness, etc., but early diagnosis usually requires a combination of HCG test strips or ultrasound results. In addition, women with menstruation, cataracts or headache, coughing yellow phlegm with chest tightness may also show a slippery pulse. In addition, conditions such as before and after menstruation, anemia, and rheumatism may sometimes show slippery pulse, and these influencing factors need to be excluded. After pregnancy is confirmed, pregnant women are advised to maintain a good state of mind during pregnancy, exercise appropriately, supplement the nutrition required during pregnancy such as folic acid, iron, protein, vitamins, etc., and have regular maternity checkups.
