What are the manifestations of gallbladder cancer?

Gallbladder cancer usually does not cause signs or symptoms until the disease has progressed to a more advanced stage, however, sometimes symptoms can appear earlier, leading to an early diagnosis. Treatment is usually more effective if the tumor is detected at an early stage. Some of the more common symptoms of gallbladder cancer include: Abdominal pain (tummy ache) Most people with gallbladder cancer experience abdominal pain, usually in the upper right side of the abdomen. Nausea and/or vomiting People with gallbladder cancer sometimes experience vomiting. Jaundice Jaundice refers to a yellow coloration of the skin or white eyes. If the tumor grows large enough to press on the bile ducts, bile from the liver cannot flow into the intestines. This causes bilirubin (a chemical in bile that gives bile its color, yellow) to build up in the bloodstream and be deposited in other parts of the body, often readily seen in the skin and eyes. Abdominal Masses If the tumor presses on the bile ducts, the gallbladder will appear swollen beyond its normal size. Gallbladder cancer may also spread to neighboring parts of the liver. Sometimes doctors are able to detect a mass on the right side of the abdomen on palpation, or through imaging tests, such as ultrasound. Other Symptoms Less common gallbladder cancer symptoms include: 1. loss of appetite 2. weight loss 3. abdominal swelling 4. fever 5. itching of the skin 6. deepening of the color of the urine 7. light-colored or greasy stools Gallbladder cancer is uncommon, and these signs and symptoms are more commonly seen in conditions other than gallbladder cancer. For example, patients with gallstones may also experience many of these symptoms. There are more common causes of abdominal pain than gallbladder cancer. And viral hepatitis (liver infection) is a much more common cause of jaundice. However, if you experience any of these symptoms, you should seek immediate medical attention so that the cause can be found and, if necessary, treated in a timely manner. These symptoms may not necessarily mean that you have gallbladder cancer, but it is important to go to the hospital and get checked out so that you know the cause.
