Difficulty in sleeping is not necessarily due to high liver fire, but may also be caused by deficiency of the heart and spleen (weakness of the heart and spleen), phlegm-heat disturbing the heart, or heart-kidney disharmony (heart fire and kidney yin deficiency, dysfunction of the physiological functions of the heart and kidneys), which need to be judged in conjunction with the patient’s clinical symptoms. Difficulty in falling asleep belongs to the category of insomnia. If the difficulty in falling asleep is accompanied by symptoms such as irritability, dry mouth, bitterness and pain in the abdomen and ribs, it is considered to be caused by exuberant liver fire. If the difficulty in falling asleep is accompanied by dizziness, fatigue (mental exhaustion, physical weakness), and lack of energy (lack of strength, not wanting to speak), it belongs to the syndrome of deficiency of the heart and spleen. Difficulty in sleeping with symptoms such as heavy head, dizziness, reddish tongue, yellowish greasy moss and slippery pulse belongs to the syndrome of phlegm-heat disturbing the heart. If the difficulty in sleeping is accompanied by dizziness, tinnitus, lumbar and knee weakness (a feeling of weakness in the lumbar area and knees), hot flashes (a burst of heat), night sweating (abnormal sweating after going to sleep, which stops after waking up), heartburn and heat (heat in the hearts of the hands and feet, and self-consciousness of the heart and chest being irritated and hot), and dryness in the throat with little fluids, it belongs to the syndrome of the heart and kidneys not intermingling. Consultation with a doctor is needed for specific identification.
