Chinese herbs that can be used for external washing for jaundice include Huangbai, Yin Chen and Bitter Ginseng.
Huangbai has the efficacy of clearing heat and drying dampness, diarrhea and detoxification, and removing bone vapor. It can be used for treating damp-heat leucorrhoea, heat drenching (burning and stinging pain when urinating, accompanied by frequent urination and urgency, and discomfort in the abdomen), astringent pain, damp-heat diarrhea (diarrhea caused by feeling damp-heat), jaundice, night sweating (sweating abnormally after falling asleep, but sweating stops after waking up), spermatorrhea, and itching of eczema. It is not recommended for people with cold spleen and stomach.
Yin Chen, with the efficacy of clearing dampness and heat, inducing diuresis and relieving jaundice (clearing evil Qi from the biliary tract and eliminating jaundice). It is used for treating jaundice with low urine output, dampness-warmth (warmth caused by feeling dampness-heat), summer dampness, and itching of wet sores. Caution should be exercised for those who accumulate blood to produce yellow and those who are deficient in blood to wither yellow.
Bitter ginseng has the effects of clearing heat and drying dampness, killing worms and diuretic. It is used for treating damp-heat diarrhea, blood in the stool, jaundice, damp-heat leucorrhea, swollen and itchy nether regions, eczema and wet sores, itchy skin, and damp-heat dysuria (unruly urination). Contraindicated for those with cold spleen and stomach, and should not be used with veratrum.
