What asthma patients and their families need to know about dust mites

The first thing to remember – humidity is important for dust mites: 70% to 75% of a dust mite’s body weight is water, and by absorbing water vapor from the air, dust mites can largely maintain internal water balance. For dust mites, the key humidity is 55% to 75% at temperatures between 15°C and 35°C, so it is important to keep gout dry to kill dust mites. Mite bodies and mite excretions are the source of many allergens: 1. mite excretions (enzymes) – produced in the digestive tract of mites 2. molting 3. saliva left on food residues when mites feed 4. secretion of fluids from short riveted glands associated with active water absorption by mites 5. release of soluble proteins from body fluids during carcass decomposition after death of mites Dust mites, house dust mites – indoor dwellings worldwide, the vast majority of dwellings are dust Dust mites and house dust mites coexist in the majority of indoor areas worldwide. Dust mites can cause allergic rhinitis, asthma, urticaria, dermatitis, with rapid or late onset (3.5-8.5h). Dust mites can cause atopic dermatitis through: 1. 3. Reduce human exposure to dust mites and their allergens. Dust mite control principles: three points: (dust mite) fear of light, heat and dryness one principle: reduce mite allergen levels Dust mite control methods: reduce indoor relative humidity: use air conditioners, dehumidifiers or open windows to ventilate according to the season and climate (humidity less than 50%) Use of wrapping covers: young mites are generally larger than 50 microns in width, therefore, fabrics less than or equal to 20 microns will prevent all mites from passing through. Washing, drying and dry cleaning of bedding: ordinary laundry detergent at 25°C and at least 5 minutes removes most mite and cat hair allergens Carpets, curtains and home décor (furniture): use polished wood floors, vinyl floors, floor tiles, use leather, vinyl, wood furniture Replacement of curtains: replace with scrubbable blinds or wash frequently Try not to live in the basement Frozen soft toys and small Items: Freeze soft toys and small items (such as pillows and special clothing) at -17°C to -20°C for at least 24 hours. Wash items after freezing to remove dead mites and allergens. Carpet vacuuming: use a high performance vacuum cleaner (mite protection performance requirements: vacuum cleaner bag should be double or central vacuum cleaner end leads to outdoor)
