The hazards of doing fusion of lumbar discs are mainly the following two: First, the fusion of lumbar discs will lead to the fusion of two vertebrae together, thus becoming one vertebral body. Because there is no mobility between the two vertebrae, it will lead to a certain restriction of lumbar activities, especially in bending activities. Second, although lumbar disc fusion gives permanent stability to the two vertebrae, it can lead to accelerated degenerative changes in the adjacent vertebrae. It can even lead to disc herniation and bone degeneration in the adjacent vertebrae, and can also lead to the generation of lumbar spondylolisthesis. Therefore, the hazards of lumbar fusion are relatively high.
