Vague pain in the back and both ribs is seen for the following reasons: First, it is an atypical manifestation of cervical spondylosis, which can be associated with thoracic back girdle-like pain and prolonged chronic strain, and some patients also have significant upper limb weakness, numbness, and even limited movement, which can be confirmed by CT or MRI. Secondly, osteophytes, mainly in the thoracic vertebrae, can also cause intercostal nerve involvement, manifesting as pain in the thoracic back, and even numbness and distension in the ribs on both sides. Thirdly, secondary to infection of the chest cavity, especially infection of the lung tissue, pleurisy, pleural effusion, the patient will show pain in the chest and back with fever and cough and sputum, and after the infection heals, there will be thickening of the pleura. Therefore, the patient may experience significant pain after exertion, and in severe cases, breathing may be restricted or even affect lung function.
