Phellodendron, raw, pungent, sweet and cool in nature; cooked, sweet and warm in nature, belongs to the liver, kidney and large intestine meridians. It has the function of stopping bleeding, breaking down blood stasis and promoting blood circulation, and dispersing nodules. It is often used in the treatment of bleeding symptoms in the lower jiao, and the fried charcoal of Phellodendron is specialized in stopping bleeding. For bleeding from prolapse, it can be fried with Phellodendron leaf and palm as the powder and served with wine. For the treatment of bleeding from intestinal wind, it can be decocted together with Diyu; for the treatment of bleeding from dirty poison, it is often decocted together with Astragalus. It can be used to treat menstrual stagnation and is often used together with Radix Angelicae Sinensis, Peach kernel and Safflower. It is used to treat dripping and astringent pain in urine, and is often taken with Shi Wei, Hai Jin Sha and Che Qian Zi in a decoction.
