There are two main types of meniscus surgery, one is open surgery and the other is minimally invasive surgery. Because open surgery is more damaging and recovery is slower, it has basically been eliminated and very few people have this surgery. Arthroscopic surgery is currently the most widely performed procedure, because it only requires two small holes of about 0.5 cm in the knee, and through arthroscopic examination, we can observe whether there is damage inside the meniscus and the extent of the damage. Depending on the extent of the meniscus damage, we will make the appropriate treatment, such as meniscal repair or suturing, and a partial or complete meniscectomy. The specific surgical approach is based on the results seen arthroscopically. Generally speaking, since the meniscus is a major cushioning structure in the body, it will be preserved as much as possible, and it will not be removed if it can be repaired, or partially removed if it can be completely removed.
