What is general surgery? What diseases are included in the scope of general surgery?

General surgery, also known as general surgery, comes from the English name DepartmentofGeneralSurgery, which is translated as general surgery by the Chinese, but actually can be understood as comprehensive surgery. General surgery” is not ordinary! General surgery is the largest discipline in the whole field of surgery, it contains a lot of diseases, which can be broadly understood as: liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, gastrointestinal tract, thyroid, breast, peripheral blood vessels and other diseases that need surgical treatment. These diseases include congenital anomalous diseases, inflammatory diseases, injury diseases, and tumor diseases. However, with the cross-fertilization of multiple disciplines and the development of new equipment and instruments as well as the progress of new technologies, some diseases that used to require general surgery are now classified as interventional and internal medicine. Sometimes, with the progress of changes in the disease, diseases that could be treated by internal medicine have to be transferred to general surgery, so they are interchangeable. For example, a typical example is gastric and duodenal ulcer, which is usually treated by internal medicine and most of them can be cured, but if the effect of internal medicine is not good, the ulcer does not heal after a long time, or there are serious complications such as haemorrhage, ulcer perforation, pyloric obstruction, ulcer carcinoma, etc., then general surgery is needed.
