How to reduce the swelling of an IV drip

An IV bulge is a common reaction to the IV infusion process. This condition is often due to the needle being pricked out of the vessel, causing fluid to accumulate under the skin. This condition depends on the composition of the fluid, if it is a more corrosive or serious chemotherapy drug then it needs to be cut open and the area flushed out, if it is a general infusion drug then a hot compress under slight pressure can be applied to promote the absorption of the local edema. The affected limb can be elevated about 25-30 centimeters above the heart at rest to allow easy fluid reflux to the heart. If the swelling is accompanied by significant pain, topical application of Xylitol can also be used to promote absorption and improve pain as well as control local inflammation.
