When leukaemia causes splenomegaly, firstly, active treatment of the leukaemia is required and in addition surgical removal can be considered. Leukaemia often invades and infiltrates extramedullary haematopoietic tissue first, resulting in an enlarged spleen. If leukaemia treatment is limited and the spleen continues to increase in size, surgical removal should be considered for symptomatic treatment purposes.
