Commonly used expectorants in clinical practice include amiloride, eucalyptus pinene, and carboxymesterol, which need to be selected and used in the context of the patient’s overall status. The use of expectorants facilitates the dilution and expulsion of sputum and the control of infection, but more importantly, the cause of coughing sputum should be examined and evaluated accordingly. For example, if infection is considered, anti-infective therapy should be given in this case to facilitate the recovery of the patient’s overall symptoms. In addition, if other causes of increased coughing sputum are considered, timely management of the cause is needed to help control the patient’s condition.
