Are there any after-effects of bunion surgery?

Bunion surgery has the potential to cause long-term complications, also known as sequelae. Depending on the type of surgery, the common complications are as follows: 1. Long-term localized pain. When correcting bunion deformity, there is a possibility of localized soft tissue release, or osteotomy type of surgery. These surgeries are traumatic to the normal joints themselves and may leave localized long-term pain after the surgery, which may be aggravated by cloudy days, rain, or changes in the weather.2. Decrease in strength of the bunion muscles, which is more common after osteotomies of the first phalanx. After this type of surgery, the strength of the bunion flexor muscles may be reduced.3. Localized scarring of the skin.4. Hyperpigmentation of the area where the scarring occurs.
