Abstract: A 45-year-old female patient presented to our hospital with a tingling sensation, numbness, burning sensation and altered taste sensation on the surface of the tongue, and was initially diagnosed with linguitis after completion of relevant tests. After 2 months of oral and topical medication, the patient’s condition gradually recovered, and the numbness, burning and tingling sensations on the tongue improved, and her appetite returned to normal.

I. Initial consultation
The patient, a 45-year-old female, complained of a tingling sensation on the surface of the tongue, a change in taste sensation, and a very painful tongue when eating spicy food, especially the tip and edge of the front part of the tongue, with a numbing and burning sensation, which causes pain when eating. The patient was in good health and denied any history of smoking, systemic disease or drug allergy. Physical and specialist examination: The patient had general oral hygiene, atrophy of the lingual papillae on both sides of the tongue with shallow fissures, congestion and redness of the mucosa at the tip of the tongue, and no other significant abnormalities were observed. The results of blood routine, vitamin, trace elements and autoimmune tests did not show any significant abnormality, and tongue inflammation was considered.
II. Treatment
The patient was advised to adjust his mind and keep his mood relaxed, followed by comprehensive treatment with amoxicillin capsules, cefradine capsules, compound ciprochloronium chloride tablets, zinc glycyrrhiza granules, vitamin B2 tablets and vitamin C tablets. Topical gargling with Cipay Gum Fixing Solution was used to clean the oral hygiene. The patient is advised to eat more fresh vegetables and fruits with appropriate amount of coarse grains, cereals, lean meat and nuts.
III. Treatment effect
After 1 month of comprehensive application of drug treatment, the patient’s condition gradually improved, and the numbness and burning sensation of the tongue improved significantly. After 2 months of treatment, the tingling sensation of the patient’s tongue during eating basically disappeared, appetite gradually returned to normal, and the phenomenon of tongue papilla atrophy was relieved. The patient’s tongue mucosa congestion was also relieved. No adverse drug reactions occurred during the regular medication period, and the patient was satisfied with the treatment effect.
IV. Notes
We are glad that the patient’s tongue inflammation gradually improved, but we also need to advise the patient to pay attention to avoid eating spicy and stimulating food, too hot and too cold food, and eat more vitamin-rich fruits and vegetables, which can replenish the vitamins and trace elements required by the body and maintain a balanced nutrition. V. Personal insight
There are many causes of linguitis, systemic factors are more common, this patient may be due to vitamin deficiency, endocrine disorders coupled with infection factors. The pain during the attack of tongue inflammation is unbearable and normal eating may become a problem. Fortunately, the patient received timely treatment and the disease progress was controlled in time through comprehensive treatment.
