How long between suctioning

Suctioning is used to remove phlegm from the airway to ensure the airway is clear. 2 suctioning intervals of more than 3 minutes, and depending on the patient’s condition, the frequency and interval of suctioning can be adjusted, and the suctioning once should not be more than 15 seconds. If the patient’s airway is blocked by thick sputum, sputum can be suctioned several times at intervals of 3 minutes or more. When the patient’s airway is clear, this is the time to stop suctioning. Do not suction frequently to prevent unstable respiratory function or even damage to the airway mucosa. After opening the patient’s airway, clear the secretions from the upper airway, insert the end cannula for sputum suction into the lumen of the nose, mouth or incised bronchus, and perform sputum suction.
