How long can you live with massive ascites?

There is no specific value for how long one can live with massive ascites, ranging from a few days to decades, depending on the patient’s specific condition and the underlying disease causing the ascites as well as the severity of the disease.
There are many causes of ascites, including portal hypertension, renal disease, cardiogenic disease, peritoneal inflammation and so on. Different causes can cause massive ascites.
The most common clinical cause of massive ascites is the decompensated stage of cirrhosis. Cirrhosis decompensation stage can have many complications, such as hepatic encephalopathy, coagulation abnormalities, severe liver failure, etc. Without artificial liver treatment, death can occur in a few hours; timely treatment, it is possible to extend the survival life, but there is no clear value on how long it can be extended.
If a large amount of ascites excludes cirrhosis, cardiogenic, renal, cancerous diseases, etc., and is only caused by hypoproteinemia, ascites can be eliminated after supplementation of human albumin and diuresis, and the life expectancy can be several decades.
If you have ascites, consult a doctor in time to find out the cause of the disease, and give the treatment to the cause.
