Why do coughs worsen at night in the elderly

Coughing in the elderly, which is aggravated at night, may be caused by cardiovascular disease, that is, coughing due to cardiac insufficiency. Elderly people with cardiac insufficiency are in a lying position at night, thus increasing the amount of blood returned to the heart, which increases the load on the heart and causes pulmonary stasis, leading to an increase in cough symptoms. It can also be seen in chronic inflammatory diseases of the airways, such as cough caused by chronic bronchitis. The cough is aggravated at night by vagal excitation, which leads to constriction and spasm of the bronchi. In the case of cough caused by reflux pharyngitis, it can also be aggravated at night, when the patient with reflux pharyngitis is in a lying position and the esophageal tone decreases, making the reflux symptoms more pronounced and thus aggravating the cough.
