What to do when an elderly person smokes and coughs

Coughs caused by smoking in the elderly need to be treated if they need to be dealt with, and then according to the type of cough, as follows: 1. A dry cough with a strong cough but no sputum, or just a small amount of foamy sputum or a small amount of mucous sputum, this cough is usually a chronic inflammatory change in the airways, often referred to as an allergic cough, which is aggravated by smelling irritating odors or eating heavy foods, and is usually treated with Airway anti-inflammatory and cough suppressant medications, such as cotrimoxazole, or other nebulized inhalation medications such as budesonide, are usually used for treatment. However, if the cough has sputum, especially if there is more sputum, the type of cough needs to be clarified, such as more yellow sputum, more black and gray sputum, especially if it is also accompanied by fever, usually combined with bacterial infection, and cough suppressants cannot be applied because it will be more difficult to expel sputum if strong cough suppressants are given; 2. For patients with more sputum, the principle of treatment is firstly expectoration, and according to the sputum situation, the blood cell examination, lung CT examination, so as to determine whether there is lung inflammation, bronchial inflammation, and if it is determined that there is more infected sputum, while also adding antibiotic treatment. Therefore, the cough caused by smoking in the elderly should be divided into two cases, whether the dry cough is caused by chronic airway inflammation or co-infection, which needs to be treated differently.
