The appearance of white moss on the tongue may be a normal physiologic condition that requires no special treatment, or it may be seen in pathological conditions such as oral leukoplakia and oral lichen planus. The cause of the condition should be clearly diagnosed before treatment, and it should be clear that there is no such thing as the “fastest” way to remove it. If you want to achieve the most therapeutic effect, a combination of treatment modalities is required. 1. Oral leukoplakia: It may be caused by local stimuli (such as surface abrasion), physical and chemical factors (such as smoking), microbial infections (such as Candida albicans). The white patches appear as plaques or crumpled paper. Treatment includes removal of the irritant, topical treatment (e.g., application of retinoic acid cream), and administration of cod liver oil or vitamin A. If there are hyperplasia, hard nodules or ulcers on the white spots, they should be surgically removed and biopsied to determine their pathological nature. 2. Oral lichen planus: the etiology is unknown, may be related to immune, endocrine, psychological, genetic factors, manifested as the appearance of speckled or round white spot-like lesions on the front of the tongue. Treatment includes removing local irritation, keeping the mouth clean, using topical retinoic acid, and taking oral adrenocorticotropic hormone (e.g., prednisone). It should be noted that both oral leukoplakia and oral lichen planus are precancerous. The appearance of white moss should be timely consultation, to avoid the deterioration of the condition, delayed treatment, the use of drugs need to follow the doctor’s instructions.
