What are episodic premature contractions?

Premature beats are a common clinical arrhythmia and can be classified as frequent or episodic according to their frequency. Premature beats can occur in all populations, and their risk is determined by their site of origin and frequency of occurrence. Premature beats can be classified as sinus, atrial, atrioventricular junction, or ventricular depending on the origin of the abnormal beat. Ventricular premature contractions are the most common, followed by atrial premature contractions. The frequency of premature contractions can be divided into episodic contractions, which occur less than 5 times per minute, and frequent contractions, which occur 6 times or more. Episodic premature contractions are most common in healthy people and can be triggered or aggravated by fatigue, emotional stress, alcohol consumption, etc. The presence of organic heart disease is also a common cause of premature beats. Episodic premature contractions may be accompanied by palpitations or a feeling of a falling heartbeat, but many patients do not experience any significant sensation. An electrocardiogram or ambulatory electrocardiogram can clarify the type and frequency of premature beats and guide the diagnosis and treatment. Patients with episodic atrial premature beats or episodic ventricular premature beats that do not cause other ventricular arrhythmias at the site of origin do not have any health consequences as long as their symptoms do not affect their normal life. For patients with ventricular premature beats whose origin may induce fatal arrhythmias, regardless of the frequency of premature beats and whether they are symptomatic or not, they should be treated promptly with drugs or catheter radiofrequency ablation according to the patient’s basic condition to avoid sudden cardiac death. Most of the episodic premature beats do not affect health, so there is no need to be nervous when they are detected or diagnosed, and timely consultation and reasonable lifestyle adjustments should be made to avoid the triggers of premature beats. The frequency of premature contractions can be divided into episodic and frequent contractions. Most of the episodic premature contractions do not affect health and do not require medication or surgery, except in cases of fatal arrhythmia. It is important to avoid the causes of premature beats such as excessive stress, exertion or alcohol consumption in daily life and to review them regularly.
