How viral meningitis develops

The meninges can be simply understood as a layer of skin on the surface of the brain. Meningitis is an inflammatory response to infection of the meninges by pathogens such as bacteria and viruses. Viral meningitis is therefore a disease in which a virus enters the bloodstream, producing a viraemia that invades the meninges via the choroid plexus and causes inflammatory changes in the meninges.
