This baby was already three years old when he came to my clinic, which is past the recommended age for surgery. Therefore, the parents were very anxious and self-conscious during the consultation, and kept asking me if it was too late to bring the baby here for treatment, and whether the thumb could still be saved. We recommend that babies with floating thumbs be operated on between the age of six months and one year, as this is the stage when the thumb function is being established, and it is better for the baby’s physical and mental development if the thumb is established as early as possible, so that the baby does not develop a serious habit of pinching with the middle finger or index finger. It doesn’t mean that the thumb can’t be preserved after the age of surgery, as long as the baby is willing to do the surgery, the thumb can be preserved. Nowadays, we mainly use half metacarpal bone graft reconstruction technique to treat floating bunion, which is to reconstruct the first metacarpal bone from the second metacarpal bone of the child. For young babies, the metacarpal bone of both the donor and recipient areas can continue to grow after the operation, but adults don’t have this advantage. So as long as there is a willingness to operate, it doesn’t matter if the baby is now three years old or five or six years old, or already twelve or thirteen years old, as long as there is a willingness to operate it makes sense for the child.
