Mouth ulcers are not mouth ulcers. Mouth ulcers are a disease, and mouth ulcers are a symptom of diseases such as stomatitis and canker sores. Mouth ulcers usually occur in the oral mucosa, presenting a localised ulcerative injury with more obvious pain, and are generally clinically referred to as mouth sores.
