Some women may have empty follicles due to abnormal ovarian function and no eggs are discharged, but there is no test that can confirm 100% that it is an empty follicle. In some cases, the follicle itself is growing, but because the egg is not discharged properly, the follicle may become luteinized and the follicle may be seen to be smaller in size during a vaginal ultrasound, but no obvious egg discharge can be detected. In women with empty follicles, the follicles can still grow under the stimulation of hormones in the body, but since there is no egg discharge, there is no way to distinguish whether the follicle is empty or not because the follicle may suddenly shrink and become smaller when it grows to more than 2 cm.
