What’s wrong with the edge of your big toe?

Pain at the edge of the big toe may be related to shoe compression, onychomycosis, corns, bunions and other diseases.

1. Shoe compression: If the shoe does not fit properly or is hard, walking for a long period of time may cause pressure on the big toe, resulting in pain, which is usually relieved after taking off the shoe and resting or replacing it with a suitable shoe.

2. Inflammation of the nail: Inflammation of the nail is caused by a bacterial infection in the nail groove area, and the inflammation will be manifested as redness, swelling and pain around the toenail, and in severe cases, granulomatous hyperplasia and purulent secretion will occur.

3. Corns: Corns are caused by excessive friction of the skin due to too much walking and tight shoes, and the skin cuticle grows to the deeper part of the skin. It is a round or oval, yellowish or dark yellow lesion, usually with severe pain and limited walking.

4. Bunion: When the symptoms are severe, the big toe is tilted to the outside under the second toe, and pain can occur when it is squeezed while walking.

There are other reasons that can cause symptoms of pain at the edge of the big toe, such as trauma, lumbar disc herniation, etc. If the pain is not relieved after resting, it is recommended to go to the hospital for medical checkups and standardized treatments in accordance with the doctor’s instructions after a clear diagnosis, so as to avoid delaying the condition.
