The course of H. pylori eradication treatment is 10-14 days, preferably with a full 14 days of medication to ensure that H. pylori is completely eradicated. Some patients may fail in their first treatment of H. pylori for a variety of reasons, such as poor compliance, not taking the medication as prescribed or not taking the full course of medication, and possibly resistance to certain antibiotics. If treatment fails, a second H. pylori eradication treatment may be required, and a specialist should be consulted. After H. pylori treatment, a repeat carbon 13 and 14 breath test is required to see if H. pylori has been completely eradicated. The overall recommended treatment period for H. pylori is 14 days.
