Understanding Bone Anchored Hearing Aids

Hearing loss doesn’t just affect your hearing, it affects your life. We know you are looking for a better solution for your hearing loss. One is a rigorous, reliable and effective solution, the bone-anchored hearing aid. It is a revolutionary, first and foremost, a solution for sensorineural deafness; a long-term, alternative to traditional hearing aids. The BAHA Bone Anchored Hearing Device (BAHA) is a surgical implant system for the treatment of hearing loss through direct bone conduction. 2002, the FDA approved its use for the treatment of unilateral sensorineural hearing loss. The BHA is used to help people with chronic ear infections, congenital external atresia and unilateral deafness where traditional hearing aids are ineffective. The system is surgically implanted and allows sound to travel through the bone, rather than through the middle ear. It consists of three parts: a titanium implant, an external dam shoulder and a sound processor. The system works by raising the natural bone to transmit sound to the inner ear, bypassing the external ear canal and the middle ear. The sound processor transmits the sound vibrations. Vibration implants build on the vibrations of the skull and inner ear, stimulating the nerve fibers of the inner ear to obtain hearing. Baha is used to restore hearing to people with conductive and mixed loss hearing impairments. This includes people with chronic ear canal infections, congenital ear malformations, infections, or surgery that results in a very narrow ear canal, and people with unilateral hearing loss, post-operative hearing loss from an auditory neuroma. Baja has a distinct advantage over traditional hearing aids in that the device is placed in the bone behind the ear. It is worn in the hair and is not perceptible to others.
