Symptoms of thalassemia

The symptoms of thalassemia are mainly anemia, but the clinical manifestations are different according to the degree, mainly including α-pearl protein production disorder anemia and β-pearl protein production disorder anemia. 1. α-CPD anemia can be divided into four types: (1) The stationary type has no clinical manifestations and no anemia; (2) Mild anemia with or without symptoms, which may be aggravated by infection; (3) The intermediate type occurs mostly in children, with no obvious manifestations at birth, and symptoms begin to appear around the age of one week, with mild-to-moderate anemia, mostly accompanied by jaundice as well as hepatosplenomegaly and other symptoms; (4) The severe type occurs mostly in fetuses, with abortion occurring at 30-40 weeks or premature delivery and death within half an hour of birth, and is mainly characterized by severe anemia, edema, jaundice, pleural fluid, and other clinical manifestations. 2. β-pearl protein production disorder anemia can be divided into four types: (1) Static type without clinical symptoms; (2) Mild type with insignificant symptoms, with or without anemia; (3) The intermediate type often develops in early childhood, with moderate anemia, accompanied by hepatosplenomegaly and skeletal changes; (4) Children with severe type may have severe anemia, and may have progressive enlargement of liver and spleen, and malformation of bone development.
