Dietary Precautions for Tumor Patients

Tumor patients and their family members are concerned about what to eat to fight cancer and what to avoid. Generally speaking, tumor is a consuming disease, and the diet of tumor patients should be rich in nutrition (high protein and high calorie), light and easy to digest, and foods that affect the disease (also known as “hair”) should be avoided as much as possible. In fact, “a balanced diet is the main thing, supplements are secondary”. Don’t overdo it. All along, people think that tumor patients should avoid eating, especially “hairy food”. “Hairy food” mainly refers to the food that can aggravate the disease and induce the recurrence of old disease. The following four kinds of “hairy food” should be avoided as much as possible: (1) animal food containing a lot of hormones, such as pork, rooster meat, old goose, etc. (2) Stimulating foods, such as alcohol, chili peppers, etc., because of their pungent and hot nature, Chinese medicine believes that excessive consumption of such foods can cause energy damage to yin and help damp heat. (3) Foods that easily cause allergies, such as sea shrimp, sea crab, etc. (4) Sticky and thick-tasting foods, such as wine and sticky rice, are easy to accumulate after eating and cause digestive malabsorption. Although tumor patients should have some taboos, however, that overly demanding taboos, even eggs, fish are not to eat the practice. The recipes for tumor patients should not be too narrow, and as long as the digestive and absorption function of spleen and stomach allows, the necessary dietary adjustment should be given, so as to improve the tolerance of human body to surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, improve the whole body condition, strengthen the role of “supporting the righteous and dispelling the evil”, and thus obtain better long-term curative effect. Therefore, family members often try to give tonic to patients in order to restore their strength and recover as soon as possible. In clinical practice, family members often go to two extremes when it comes to supplementation: one is to think that tumor is a “huge consuming disease” and needs “big food and big tonic”. It is true that tumor patients need nutrition, but in the process of tumor attacking human body, the function of human organs is seriously damaged, so that patients’ taste sense is reduced, appetite is decreased and digestion function is poor, which leads to disorders of nutrient absorption and metabolism. At this time, if patients are given indigestible food, it will not only fail to be digested and absorbed, but also aggravate the gastrointestinal digestive dysfunction and further aggravate anorexia. Therefore, the diet of cancer patients should depend on their appetite and should not be consumed blindly. Secondly, it is believed that “tumor patients cannot take tonic food, and tonic food will promote the growth of tumor”. In fact, up to now, no tonic has been found to be only for tumors but not for human body. On the contrary, many clinical and animal experiments have found that many tonic medicines have the effect of enhancing the immune function of the body. However, there are rules for taking tonic, not all good tonic are suitable for every tumor patient. According to Chinese medicine, before taking tonic, it is necessary to distinguish which type of deficiency (Yin deficiency, Yang deficiency, Qi deficiency, Blood deficiency or both Qi and Yin deficiency) the patient belongs to, and choose the corresponding tonic accordingly. Balanced diet “A balanced diet is the main thing, and tonic is secondary”. Knowing how to regulate the diet can help patients recover to the greatest extent. For example, to prevent or reduce the decline of white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets caused by bone marrow suppression, patients can eat more foods that benefit qi and replenish blood and fill the marrow of the kidney, such as Agaricus, red dates, peanuts, walnuts, cinnamon, spinach, milk, soybeans, lean meat, egg yolk and shiitake mushrooms. When you lose your appetite, you can choose foods such as hawthorn, Chen Pi and Buddha’s hand to make tea and drink, and eat more appetizing snacks to stimulate your appetite, such as hawthorn cake, lentils, yam and lemon honey, watermelon juice, pear juice and horsetail juice. This is the best way to recover through balanced diet and wide intake of various nutrients needed by human body, while supplements can often only play a role in one aspect. It is better for tumor patients to consult their doctors before taking supplements, and do not just listen to advertisements. The idea that taking supplements can cure tumors is impractical.
