Physical activity and glaucoma

Why is it important for glaucoma patients to do physical activity? After reading the previous article, many glaucoma patients have the perception that having glaucoma is like having a terminal disease and they cannot do anything, neither can they read books or newspapers, nor can they use their eyes, let alone participate in sports activities, they can only order eye drops at home. In fact, this view is wrong. In fact, glaucoma patients are able to do physical exercise, especially physical exercise, because through appropriate physical exercise, we can strengthen our body, so as to achieve the purpose of physical and mental health; in addition, appropriate physical exercise can make our blood vessels in a mildly dilated state, thus reducing the reflux resistance of the upper scleral vein, and play a role in reducing intraocular pressure. Sports activities to be avoided by glaucoma patients First of all, glaucoma patients should avoid strenuous sports, such as playing soccer, basketball, volleyball, heavy running, aerobics and any equipment fitness. This makes the optic nerve, which is already undersupplied with blood, even more ischemic and hypoxic; at the same time, strenuous exercise makes the blood vessels in the extremities dilate while the blood vessels in the head and viscera contract, resulting in increased resistance to venous reflux in the sclera and eventually an increase in intraocular pressure. In addition, if glaucoma patients do strenuous exercise after surgery, it can make the already fragile blood vessels rupture, causing intraocular hemorrhage, retinal detachment, choroidal detachment and other more serious complications, or worse, it may lead to blindness. Therefore, patients with glaucoma must avoid strenuous exercise and heavy physical work. Secondly, glaucoma patients should not do prolonged head-down, bending or squatting exercises, such as yoga inversions, weight lifting, sit-ups, etc. Because long time head down, bending or squatting movement can make the jugular vein blood return resistance increased significantly, so that the scleral vein return resistance increased, so that glaucoma patients are already relatively high intraocular pressure further increase, aggravate the damage to the optic nerve, so that the condition is aggravated. As a glaucoma patient, it is important to increase outdoor exercise, because moderate physical exercise can not only make the blood vessels of our whole body dilate, reduce the reflux resistance of the suprascleral veins and lower the intraocular pressure; but also increase the blood supply of the optic nerve and provide more nutrition to the optic nerve; more importantly, proper physical exercise, especially outdoor exercise, can make glaucoma patients The more important thing is that proper physical exercise, especially outdoor exercise, can make glaucoma patients contact more people, so that they no longer focus only on the disease itself, but put more attention on life, so that the patient’s mood is relaxed, which helps the recovery of the disease. However, glaucoma patients should consult a glaucoma specialist when starting any more intense exercise to clarify whether their condition is suitable for such exercise. Therefore, it is important for glaucoma patients to do moderate exercises such as climbing, walking, doing exercises, playing tennis, hiking, etc. under the guidance of a specialist, all of which help glaucoma patients maintain physical and mental health and are beneficial for lifelong disease control.
