Why lying on your back can adjust the position of the fetus

Pregnant women lie on their backs to adjust the fetal position by shifting the center of gravity of the fetus through a change in position. The position of lying on the back is clinically known as the knee-chest position, where the elbows and knees are utilized to support the body. The position of the fetus in the amniotic fluid can be changed by the pregnant woman through the knee-chest lying position. This is because the head of the fetus weighs more and sinks in the amniotic fluid, while the buttocks are lighter and naturally move upward under the buoyancy of the amniotic fluid, thus allowing the fetal position to be adjusted. Therefore, by lying in the knee-chest position you can help move the fetus to a position in the uterus that makes labor easier, i.e., head down. If a pregnant woman’s examination results show that the fetus is not in the correct position, it is recommended that she seek prompt medical attention and targeted treatment or therapy with the help of her doctor.
