Reflections on the level of awareness of periodontitis

Because of my profession, I often come into contact with patients with periodontal disease. Among them are my own compatriots and foreign friends. One obvious feeling to me is that our compatriots are significantly less aware of periodontal disease than Westerners, and consequently, the compliance in the treatment of periodontal disease is also relatively poor. The reasons for this are probably related to the following factors: the lack of knowledge about oral preventive care, especially periodontal disease, is the main reason. Many people (mainly dentists) think that this is determined by the literacy level of the patients, but I think this is not true, because there are quite a few people who are more educated and have much less knowledge about periodontal disease. Personally, I think the root cause of this lack is that the government, media, medical and health departments and other publicity and education work from the society is not enough, especially for certain high-incidence and susceptible people is even less (of course, this is also related to our country’s medical system, a very complex problem). People do not understand the basic knowledge of oral prevention, especially periodontal disease prevention and care, so there is no way to talk about the word “importance”. The economic standard of living is the second reason that limits people’s knowledge and attention to oral preventive health care, which has been agreed in the domestic and international literature. Only when the standard of living and general health condition are guaranteed, people will start to pay attention to the prevention and care of oral diseases. Factors such as age and gender also have a significant effect on the level of awareness and compliance. novaes et al. concluded that younger women are more likely to accept and pay attention to oral preventive care knowledge than others. Other factors such as fear or dissatisfaction with previous dental treatment experiences, type of periodontal treatment, and whether or not they have undergone surgical treatment and other experiences can affect the level of desire for oral, especially periodontal, preventive health care knowledge. In conclusion, there is an urgent need to improve the level of awareness of periodontal disease among most people in China. This needs to be led by the government, medical and health departments, media, etc. to strengthen the propaganda and education efforts, especially the targeted education work for high-incidence and susceptible groups is more important. Only through the joint efforts of the whole society can we raise the national awareness and level of periodontal disease prevention and care. We also sincerely hope that each and every one of us can stay away from periodontal disease, have a healthy tooth, and truly achieve the goal of “8020” proposed by the World Health Organization ……
