What causes low HDL cholesterol?

Low HDL cholesterol may be due to diseases such as atherosclerosis, acute infections, or due to medications such as progesterone.
HDL is the densest of all serum lipoproteins with up to 50% protein.HDL facilitates the clearance of peripheral cholesterol CHO. It is an anti-atherosclerotic factor. One of its normal values is about 1.03~2.07mmol/L, ≤1.0mmol/L is reduced.
Reduction of HDL is common in atherosclerosis coronary heart disease, pneumonia and other acute infections, diabetes mellitus, nephrotic syndrome and other pathologic factors, while some drugs such as androgens, propranolol and other β-blockers, progesterone and other medications, can also cause a decrease in this indicator.
It is recommended to go to the hospital in time to avoid delaying the condition when there is an abnormality of this index.
