The hymen is located at the opening of a woman’s vagina and serves as a barrier that protects the vagina from bacteria, viruses and other invasions. The hymen is essentially a very thin fold of mucous membrane located at the vaginal opening with a hole in the center, the size and shape of which varies from person to person. The hymen has a barrier function, mainly used to protect the vagina from invasion of harmful pathogens, to avoid the occurrence of gynecological inflammatory diseases. The hymen ruptures after a woman’s first sexual intercourse, but the edge of the hymen can still play an important role in protecting the vagina. It should be noted that the protective effect of the hymen on the vagina is not absolute, women still need to pay attention to vaginal hygiene to avoid inflammation, otherwise serious inflammatory diseases may lead to infertility or ectopic pregnancy.
