Every morning when patients get up, they may have swelling of the face and eyes, which may be related to physiological and pathological factors. Pathological factors include a variety of diseases such as cardiac insufficiency, renal diseases (e.g. nephrotic syndrome) or endocrine metabolic diseases (e.g. hypothyroidism). 1. Physiological factors: In the case of overwork, drinking a lot of water before going to bed or staying up all night, due to the body’s sodium and water retention, the patient may have morning discomfort symptoms such as facial edema and eyelid edema. 2. Cardiac insufficiency: in patients with right heart failure, the effective circulating blood volume is reduced, secondary to the increase of aldosterone causing sodium and water retention, patients may have different degrees of facial edema, and in severe cases, there may be generalized edema and other uncomfortable symptoms. 3. Renal diseases: patients with renal diseases such as nephrotic syndrome can have hypoalbuminemia, plasma colloid osmolality decreases, sodium and water retention can occur, causing facial edema, patients can appear in the morning when the eyelids, facial edema, and the aggravation of the condition can develop into generalized edema. 4. Endocrine metabolic diseases: hypothyroidism and other diseases, due to the increase of hydrophilic substances in the interstitial space of the tissues, facial and eyelid edema can also occur. It is recommended that patients with morning facial edema that does not resolve for a long period of time should consult a doctor in time to assess their condition and follow the doctor’s instructions for treatment.
