Bilateral widening of the lateral ventricles in the fetus is a relatively common problem. However, bilateral widening of the lateral ventricles does not necessarily mean that the fetus has abnormal mental development. It depends on the extent of the bilateral ventricular widening and whether it can be absorbed by the fetus later in life. Currently, it is believed that lateral ventricle widening within one centimeter is normal, and as the fetus develops, lateral ventricle widening within one centimeter may be absorbed on its own, so it does not have much effect on the development of the fetus in general. If the lateral ventricles continue to widen more than one centimeter, hydrocephalus or hypoplasia of the corpus callosum may be considered, and further examination is needed to determine whether the fetus is combined with other malformations. If it is clear that the risk of the fetus having abnormal intellectual development is high, termination of pregnancy can be chosen under the guidance of a doctor. It is recommended that patients under the guidance of professional doctors for standardized diagnosis and treatment.
