Iodoform should not be used together with red mercury, which is commonly known as red saline. Iodoform mixed with red mercury will produce mercury iodide, which is a toxic drug that may be absorbed by the wound and enter the bloodstream if applied externally to the wound, resulting in systemic toxic reactions. Usually, iodophor is applied topically or after repeatedly rinsing the wound with hydrogen peroxide or saline, then disinfected with iodophor, and also can be applied wet with iodophor, which can disinfect the wound very well. In addition, for some skin mucous membranes, especially the mucous membranes of the perineum, the application of iodophor has the best disinfection effect and is less irritating to the mucous membranes.
