What causes a small amount of bleeding after intercourse?

A small amount of bleeding after intercourse is called contact bleeding. The most common causes are cervical inflammation, cervical polyps, and submucosal fibroids protruding into the cervical opening, as well as pre-cancerous lesions of the cervix or cervical cancer, all of which may cause a small amount of vaginal bleeding after sexual intercourse. That is why it is important to go to the hospital as soon as possible for a vaginal examination, cervical liquid-based cytology, and a test for human papillomavirus. If the bleeding is caused by inflammation of the cervix, anti-inflammatory drugs should be applied, and if it is caused by submucosal fibroids or cervical polyps, surgical excision is needed. If it is caused by precancerous cervical lesions, the next step of treatment will be determined according to the results of laboratory tests and colposcopy.
