In a typical patient with metabolic syndrome, metabolic syndrome (MS) is a group of clinical syndromes with insulin resistance (IR) as the core, including abdominal obesity, hypertension, diabetes mellitus or impaired glucose regulation, dyslipidemia and other multiple cardiovascular risk factors, and is a high risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The causes of MS are not fully understood, but it is generally believed that insulin resistance (IR), hyperinsulinemia, overweight and centripetal obesity are the basis for dyslipidemia, hypertension and hyperglycemia, which are important links in the development of MS. It is usually considered to be related to genetic variants, obesity, changes in insulin antagonistic hormone levels, drugs, inflammation, and low birth mass. With the development of social economy and the change of people’s lifestyle rhythm, its prevalence is increasing year by year, and there is a trend of youthfulness. Western medicine only targets the treatment of each abnormal metabolic component of MS, and there are problems such as taking numerous medications with large adverse reactions and high prices. In contrast, TCM has a holistic concept and the idea of discriminatory treatment, which is a highly recommended method in the treatment of metabolic syndrome, especially for young and middle-aged patients with metabolic syndrome, or simple type 2 diabetes mellitus, or simple hyperlipidemia. Metabolic syndrome is similar to “phlegm-dampness”, “liver-depression”, “food-depression”, “blood-stasis” and other pathogenic factors in Chinese medicine. “Obesity”, “vertigo”, “dampness”, etc. TCM believes that the six depressions (food, qi, blood, heat, phlegm and dampness) act on the spleen and stomach to produce pathological products such as phlegm, stagnation, turbidity and lipid, etc. The six depressions led by food depression are the basis of the pathogenesis of this metabolic syndrome, and the metabolic dysfunction with liver and spleen dysfunction as the core is its basic pathogenesis. It can be treated according to the Chinese medical knowledge of obesity, thirst, vertigo and chest paralysis. We believe that phlegm and stagnation are important pathological products and pathogenic factors of MS, which can be used throughout the disease, and treatment is based on overall regulation, focusing on removing phlegm and stagnation, as well as on clearing heat, moving Qi, invigorating Blood, benefiting Qi, nourishing Yin, regulating Yin and Yang, combined with modern pharmacological research, combining pathology and evidence, improving IR, and treating MS with diet and exercise therapy, with remarkable efficacy.
