Scaling of dental calculus is not painful, only a slight soreness. The methods of removing calculus include ultrasonic supragingival scaling and subgingival scaling. The ultrasonic scaling device uses the principle of high frequency oscillation to loosen the calculus from the tooth surface and dislodge it, and large pieces of calculus will be broken up and discharged out of the mouth with the liquid and water in the mouth. The few pieces of calculus located on the root surface and in the gingival sulcus are more firmly adhered and can be removed slowly using manual instruments to avoid irritation to the gums and causing a lot of bleeding, and the teeth will have a slight pain. After scaling, the tooth surface becomes very rough and can be sandblasted and polished to make it smooth and less prone to pigmentation.
