Ultrasound is a method of examining the body using ultrasound technology, including ultrasound and color ultrasound, and now ultrasound with elastography, among others. Ultrasound is generally able to detect the presence of masses, nodules or stones in the organs or cavities of the body. Ultrasound has a very high diagnostic rate for stones. Gallbladder stones and kidney stones can generally be diagnosed at a rate of over 90% with ultrasound. If stones are found in the gallbladder on an empty stomach, a definitive diagnosis of gallbladder stones can be made. Ultrasound can also detect adenocarcinoma of the liver and hypoechoic masses in the thyroid gland and other substantial organs. It is also possible to determine whether the borders are clear, whether there is blood flow and whether there are punctate calcifications, and to make a preliminary judgment on the benignity or malignancy of these masses.
