What are the manifestations of lumbar disc herniation?

Lumbar disc herniation is commonly seen in manual laborers, drivers or long-term desk workers. The typical symptom is lumbar pain, which is radiating from the lumbar and hip areas along the posterior and lateral thighs to the lateral calf, dorsum of the foot or toes; the pain increases when coughing, sneezing and defecating; it intensifies during activities and decreases after rest. Most patients lie on their side and flex the affected limb to relieve the pain; some severe cases have pain in all positions and can only bend the hip and knee in bed to relieve the symptoms. The herniated disc compresses the cauda equina nerve and can cause urinary and fecal disorders. Tips for self-examination: lying on your back in bed, straighten the knee joint upwards when the straight leg is raised to a certain angle, there is radiating pain or numbness from the lumbar region to the lower extremities, along the back and outside of the thigh, straight to the outside of the calf, the back of the foot or the toes; pinning the skin of the calf and the foot, sensation is reduced or disappears; extending and flexing the ankle joint or extending and flexing the bunion, the power is reduced, and so on. All these manifestations suggest a lumbar disc herniation.
