How is otitis externa treated?

Otitis externa is usually treated with medication, surgery and physical therapy.
1. Drug treatment:
(1) For acute otitis externa in mild to moderate cases, give topical 2% acetic acid solution, hydrocortisone, ofloxacin, neomycin, etc., and for severe cases, give oral antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin, cephalosporin, etc;
(2) For chronic otitis externa, give topical corticosteroids such as betamethasone, hydrocortisone cream, etc., and short-term oral corticosteroids such as prednisone, etc.; for necrotizing otitis externa, give ciprofloxacin orally and ceftazidime intravenously.
2. Surgery: For necrotizing otitis externa with poor effect of medication, or severe symptoms, choose surgery to remove the lesions, radical surgery.
3. Physical therapy: including infrared rays, ultrashort wave and other treatments.
Otitis externa patients must follow the doctor’s instructions combined with the condition of standardized medication, do not self-medication. Develop good ear hygiene habits, pay attention to not digging the ear with dirty things and fingers. Keep the external auditory canal dry and prevent water from entering the external auditory canal.
